What is agaricus blazei?
A type of medicinal mushroom that is grown in Brazil, China and Japan, agaricus blazei has been used for centuries in folk medicine to treat and prevent a wide range of diseases, including allergy, cancer and infections.
It is related to the common mushroom but contains compounds that could have antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and hypoglyceamic effects.

Immune system support
Agarcus blazei contains various polysaccharides in the form of beta-glucans, which have immune boosting properties and are said to be responsible for the mushrooms well known ability to stimulate the immune system. These compounds can modulate the body’s immune response and provide protection against disease, according to studies can regulate the production of antibodies and work as “biological response modifiers”.
The mushroom activates white blood cells such as macrophages, dendritic cells, granulocytes and natural killer cells in the innate immune system, which detects danger patterns and reacts, destroying viruses and bacteria.
Anti-inflammatory
Due to its anti-inflammatory potential, agaricus blazei can benefit a number of different health conditions including inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative and Crohn’s disease, as well as reducing the inflammation that drives chronic hepatitis infections.
One study shows that adults with Crohn’s disease experienced a significant reduction in intestinal inflammation when consuming agaricus for 12 days. There was a reduction of between 18% and 78% in cytokines in blood and stool tests, this is a considered indicative of an improvement in IBD symptoms.
Another study of adults with chronic hepatitis B showed that the participants experienced a steep drop in liver enzymes after being prescribed daily doses of agaricus blazei.
